External Hemorrhoid Surgery
The most common cause of external hemorrhoids is repeated straining during bowel movements. Repeated strain on this area of the body can cause damage to the blood vessels surrounding the anus, leading to swelling and irritation. Severe cases of constipation or diarrhea often contribute. There is a genetic factor, as well: those with parents who had hemorrhoids are more at risk of developing symptoms. Minor hemorrhoids can be treated with medicated creams, suppositories, or simple ice packs. External hemorrhoid surgery is recommended for severe cases. The OC Colorectal Clinic specializes in surgical procedures to treat this painful but common and manageable condition.
An examination by a doctor is required before external hemorrhoids can be conclusively diagnosed. Many of the symptoms associated with this condition can also be caused by other factors. A physical examination to evaluate the condition of the skin surrounding the anus is done to look for swelling, lumps, leakage of mucus, and general skin irritation. If external hemorrhoid surgery is recommended, you will be given anesthesia for the procedure and recover at home afterward. In most cases you will be able to return home the same day of the procedure. Depending on the severity of the symptoms and number of hemorrhoids removed, recovery from a hemorrhoidectomy can take anywhere from one to six weeks.
Your overall diet and lifestyle have a large impact on whether or not you develop hemorrhoids. As hemorrhoids have a high correlation with difficulty passing stool, you can alleviate this condition by eating foods that are high in fiber, especially fruits and vegetables. Drinking more water can help in this regard. Dairy can cause constipation, so cut back on eggs and milk. Exercises that strain or put pressure on the abdomen, like heavy weightlifting, can contribute to the formation of hemorrhoids. If this is a concern for you, stick to more moderate exercises like swimming or walking instead.
The modern sedentary lifestyle of many in the developed world is also a contributor to hemorrhoids. Sitting for long periods of time consistently, combined with a lack of movement overall, can lead to dilation of the blood vessels near the anus over time. At least once an hour, get out of your chair and walk around for at least 5 minutes. You can install an app on your phone or computer to remind you to take breaks and walk around. Replacing your normal desk space with a standing desk to reduce the amount of time spent sitting can also reduce pressure on the area of the body where hemorrhoids form.
